We spent the last week of the Summer holidays exploring the coast, splendid gardens and ancient castles of Cornwall. It's a long journey from the Northwest, so we decided to spend a night camping near Cheddar Gorge before heading further South to Cornwall.
Nestled in the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge offered inspiring views of flourishing countryside and interesting geological formations. The pouring rain didn't stop us from climbing up the 274 steps of Jacob's Ladder to the lookout tower at the start of the trail. Charlie did so well to keep up with the whole walk and we made sure that he stayed well away from the edges at all times; hand-in-hand.
The blackberrys were starting to sprout their flowers which was a really interesting way to see how the fruit grows from the flowers. We spent a lot of the following days, picking wild blackberrys and tasting them; They were perfectly ripe and sweet. Climbing to the top of the tower (and every other step we took!) made for a great counting activity for Charlie!
We knew that the stunning coastline and beaches of Cornwall would not disappoint; But one hidden gem of a place was the extraordinary Lost Garden's of Helligan. Flourishing gardens, vibrant play areas and a rope bridge to cross in an exotic jungle; These gardens were outstanding.
Charlie enjoyed exploring the grounds and playing on the huge childrens play area. They even had Superworm themed activities along the walking trails, which as massive Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler fans, we absolutely loved taking part in. From saving the beatles and bugs from the well, to making our own lassos to save baby toads, we had so much fun!
Seal spotting at Godreavy Point was the absolute highlight at the end of our time away in Cornwall. The coastal scenery was spectacular and we felt priviledged to be able to spot puffins and seals. Clear signage led upto the seal spotting view point, giving lots of useful guidance on helping to be kind to, and protect the seals. You can read the signage and read about the work that the seal alliance do on their website: Give Seals Space Blog — The Seal Alliance Everyone followed the rules and we could hear the seals talking to each other. We even spotted a pup (baby seal) on the beach.
