Last February we went on an adventure to Northumberland in the Caravan to see if we could catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Northumberland is known for it's dark skies and it's one of the best places in England to catch a glimpse. Our first night was a clear night with a spectacular show of stars, but no Northern Lights. One the second night, The Northern Lights were out...but so were the clouds! On the day we arrived home, we'd seen on the news that the Northern Lights could still be seen across the North. We rang my Dad and asked him to come and sit in with the little man whilst he was sleeping, and headed out to Crosby Beach.
Hubby took this brilliant photo of one of the cast iron sculptures from 'Another Place' by Antony Gormley standing on the beach with the Northern Lights behind. We finally got to see them! Nothing like the swirling greens that you can see in photos from Iceland, nethertheless we saw them and were absolutely made up. The colours were more oranges and reds and it resembled more of a sunset in the sky, but we could see the movement and small ripples and knew that they were there.
I don't know what it is about Winter, but something about the cold crispness of the air seems to make the moon shine extra bright and the stars seem to twinkle so much more. There is so much beauty to be found on these cold dark nights in Winter. When you are snuggled up this evening, turn off the lights, open up your curtains and just look up!
Our January subscription box has been inspired by the magic of the sky in Winter. You can create your own bright button moon; Make stary skies pictures; And create some Aurora Borealis art work too! It is available to buy as a one-off box in the Past Boxes section of the website.
