Watercolour painting is a fun and easy way for children to explore colours whilst developing their fine motor skills. Mark-making is practiced throughout this activity as children learn how to control their hand and finger movements with or without a paintbrush.

You will need:
- Watercolour paint pallet or washable felt tips
- Cup of water
- Paint brush
- Our mermaid printable
- Kitchen roll or tissues
Tips and Ideas:
- Print out your mermaid onto plain white paper or card.
- Dip your paint brush (or fingertip) into water and rub the watercolour block of colour that you would like to use. The more water you use, the more watery and translucent (see-through) the colour will be.
- Use a tissue to dab any excess water off the paper and to dry your brush.
- Try re-dipping a dryer brush back onto the colour block and layering a more opaque (solid) colour over the top of the wet paper.
- Apply different colours next to each other and watch them move and blend together.
- If you don’t have a water colour pallet, you can also use washable felt tip pens; Draw squiggles and patterns and then paint over with water and watch the colours spread.
